I have a real passion for game design and have worked on successful games on many platforms. After years working at game developers and publishers in London and the SE, I’m now working on indie projects full time including Rise: Battle Lines, a PC strategy game made in Unity; Dreaming Spires, a board game and Reshuffling the Deck, a card game design workshop I run at the British Museum.

Experience

January 2015 – Present: The Secret Games Company – Director

I founded The Secret Games Company to develop and release a number of indie projects, so far, Dreaming Spires (2014) and Rise: Battle Lines (2015), which was published by Digital Tribe Games. We have been developing an unannounced title for PC since January.

September 2013 – December 2014: Beatnik Games – Lead Designer

Platforms: Wii U, PC, Tablet          Skills: Pitching, Communicating with publisher, Leading design, Unity

Beatnik Games is an indie studio in London, which self-published Plain Sight as their first release, receiving 76/100 on Metacritic. I joined as lead designer on an unannounced strategy title for PC and tablet, which was unfortunately put on hold by its publisher.

February 2014 – August 2014: Zoe ModeSenior Game Designer (Contract)

Platforms: PS4, Xbox One          Skills: Systems design, Photoshop, Map design

Zoe Mode is a console development studio in Brighton. I joined as the Design Lead on Ubisoft’s Risk released on PS4 and Xbox One in December, 2014. I worked with their Creative Director to develop an original mode for this classic title and create a campaign to introduce the new mechanics.

September 2012 – September 2013: GREE – Senior Game Designer / Product Manager

GREE is a mobile games developer and publisher, which has had enormous success in the Japanese market. I became the lead designer for the internal team in London, which was working on an unannounced sports title.

May 2010 – September 2012: Ideaworks Game Studio – Game Designer

I joined Ideaworks as a level designer on Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light (iOS) working in Maya and scripting in Lua. For much of the development, I was the only designer of Fable: Coin Golf, which received 9/10 from Pocket Gamer and was selected as one of the best mobile games of 2011 by Stuart Dredge in The Guardian. I also worked on COD: Black Ops Zombies (iOS/Android) and Wipeout (iOS), which was made in Unity and reached #1 (Paid) in the US AppStore.

2009-2010: SEGA – QA Tester

Keen to gain experience in the video game industry, I joined Sega’s Total War team, testing Empire: Total War, its expansions and finally Napoleon: Total War with brief stints on other titles.

2008-2009: Swoopo – UK Launch Team

I joined Swoopo, a web-based auction game, as part of its UK launch team. I was promoted to Head of UK Procurement, overseeing an annual purchasing volume of over £3m and managing a small team.

2007: Knizia Games – Design Assistant

I worked with Dr. Reiner Knizia, one of the world’s most celebrated board game designers, on a number of games for PC and handheld platforms taking a lead role in a commission from a major publisher for DS.

Interests

I play a really wide variety of games, in particular strategy titles, indie games on the PC, RPGs and FPSs on console and puzzle games and all sorts of casual stuff on iOS or DS. I also enjoy strategy board games such as Dominion and Twilight Struggle. I’m a history geek, an avid reader and an Arsenal fan. I am also a cyclist and keen traveler and, on one occasion, combined the two to cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats. I was part of a four-man expedition called Reefscape, to study SE Cuba’s coral reefs, which won the RGS Ralph Brown Expedition Prize.
